Why We Do This

The idea of “Texas Senior Watch” comes from a longtime experience of caring for the elderly and those with disabilities.

When I was 10 years old my grandmother, Concepcion, who was just diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease and Parkinson’s Disease moved in with us. I became a caregiver at a very young age. Although we had a provider who worked 20 hours a week, my mom was the main caregiver and I helped as much as possible, spoon-feeding, bathing, and changing adult diapers.

We were always double-checking the paid provider’s work.

How was her hygiene?

The concern and worry you feel are real and dire when you cannot be there 24/7 to be sure your loved one is okay. You entrust their safety and care to a stranger.

I remember one summer when we went to visit my dad’s family in Chicago. My parents arranged for my grandmother to stay at a local nursing home for the 10 days that we would be gone. After a few days we received a call from the nursing home. They did not know where my grandmother was. We waited helplessly for hours and wondered, “how can an elderly woman who can barely walk escape a nursing home without being detected?” Finally, the nursing home called and said that they had found her sitting at a bus stop a few blocks away. That day, we called a vigilant neighbor and asked her to check on my grandmother at the nursing home. She agreed to visit over her lunch hour and after she clocked-out at work.

This is when the idea of “Texas Senior Watch” was really born.

Over the years, my mom and I have checked-in on elderly neighbors, volunteered at nursing homes and State-operated assisted living facilities, and I serve as a Court appointing Guardian ad Litem to check on our elderly and disabled individuals who might need a neutral and attentive person to take a second look at their situation and report back to the Court.

My grandmother lived a long life surrounded by people who loved her, and I am thankful for the blessing of being able to care for her and see her on a daily basis. As I write this, on what would have been Concepcion’s 99th birthday, I commit that our staff will be as vigilant in the oversee of your loved-one as we were for my own grandmother.

Sincerely,
Jamie
